Thank you so much for telling so beautifully the history of the revolution and how Khomeini, who was once thought by so many to be seeking nothing but the position of a spiritual leader residing in Qom, hijacked the people’s revolution and ended up becoming the
supreme leader of the country. At the time, I was only 6 years old. But I vividly remember how my mom, a so-called intellectual and university educated, was tricked like so many others, who later felt betrayed by what they saw were unfolding, into getting out there and voting for the Islamic government. It’s funny, as a child, I had the intuition that a Mullah, who wore a turban, cloak, and beard, could hardly qualify to become the leader of a country whose a good portion of its citizens were living modern and secular lives. As a secular citizen,my father was one of the true victims of the revolution. As a theatre owner, he had to see his theatre burned down to the ground twice by the revolutionaries. He lost everything that he had worked so hard for. The stress of losing his occupation and his dignity caused him to age rapidly and to succumb to death after a long battle with cancer. In the end, I think he was relieved as the life that he had to live under the theocratic regime had become too unbearable. I, myself, along with my other sibling, left the country years ago as we, too, had lost all hope that we could ever bring back a secular democratic government to Iran that wouldn’t kill, punish, or persecutes its citizens for their beliefs, life styles
and true existence. Nevertheless, I pray for a day when we could claim what we all lost in 1979 and be able to end to this never-ending and painful exile.
